A brainstorm application for a multi-touch wall

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

During their design case project, four User System Interaction students from Eindhoven University of Technology (Sophia Atzeni, Annemiek van Drunen, Aljosja Jacobs, and Dirk Verhagen) have designed a brainstorming application for our multi-touch wall made by SOCO Amsterdam. Below they briefly describe their project and the results.

The multitouch wall, custom made for Future Workspaces by SOCO Amsterdam

“On assignment for Future Workspaces we have looked into how to improve collaborative moments for knowledge workers using multi-touch technology. One of the most promising collaborative activities that could be improved was brainstorming. An interactive system already offers many advantages, and especially during the idea clustering phase the advantages of multi-touch can be leveraged. We have developed such a brainstorming application in collaboration with knowledge workers and validated the concept using focus groups.

With our application we try to bring a good deal more fun to the brainstorming process by providing brainstorm participants with interactive games. These games bring participants to the multi touch wall, and also release some of the tensions associated with selecting ‘winning’ ideas. Next to that, we also made large improvements on the clustering process. We feel it is important to be able to freely try different clusterings, and be able to play around during this phase. Using intuitive gestures, and using a ’bubble’ metaphor, brainstorm participants are able to create, move, remove, resize, rearrange, undo and relate clusters and ideas. During the entire brainstorm we support structuring the discussion with a ‘compare idea’ tool so participants can backtrack decisions and their rationale.

Are you curious to see how this all works together to support an entire brainstorming session, from creation of ideas to the selection of them? Then please, check out our movie prototype below. We welcome any comments you might have.”

Social media @ Projective: ervaringen en geleerde lessen

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

  • sociale media versterken de informele kant van een organisatie;
  • sociale media faciliteren het leggen van contact en het elkaar weten te vinden (oftewel het versterken en verrijken van je netwerk);

Keeping Mobile Workers In Sync and In Touch: Big Challenges, Modest Solutions

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Within Future Workspaces, Jennifer Curtis conducted a study of mobile workers in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Professional Doctorate in Engineering in the area of User-System Interaction from Eindhoven University of Technology. Her findings are summarized in this post. The complete project report can be found here, and corresponding presentation here.

The two main goals of Jennifer’s project were to: (1) Identify the consequences and challenges of mobile work – particularly with respect one’s ability to stay up-to-date (i.e., in sync) and connected (i.e., in touch) with his or her distant colleagues; and, (2) come up with potential design solutions to address these challenges.

Future Workspaces booklet series

Friday, July 24th, 2009

FWS bookletsWe are proud to present the Future Workspaces booklet series!

The booklets illustrate insights, best practices, and lessons learned during two years of research, concept development, case studies, and special interest sessions with experts and industry. We plan to regularly update the series with new booklets.

Currently, the series contains the following four titles:

We hope you like the booklets and we welcome any feedback.

Evaluating Twitter in our expertise group

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Exactly two months ago our expertise group started an experiment with Twitter to see how it could facilitate knowledge sharing in between the monthly group meetings, and to see how it could improve social cohesion in the group.

Some characteristics of the expertise group

  • 14 researchers with a shared interest in how ICT affects work, life, and society;
  • they are working in the same research institute, but located over various parts of the building;
  • they frequently work elsewhere, for instance during client visits, workshops, conferences;
  • they are all working on several different projects at a time;
  • they are well acquainted with one another, though not co-working on a daily basis;
  • they share a feeling that cohesion and knowledge sharing in the group could be improved.

Ruud Janssen

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Ruud has a background in biomedical electrical engineering (M.Sc. in 1994) and in visual perception (Ph.D. in 1999). He first worked in an industrial R&D department as an expert on personal information management before he came to Novay in 2005.

Within Future Workspaces his interests lie in how developments in ICT shape and support new ways of working for knowledge workers. He prefers to use qualitative research methods (contextual interviews, focus group sessions) and design methods that rely on a strong involvement of the target user group (user centered design, in-situ evaluations).

Experimenting with social media in our expertise group

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Yesterday we organized a social media workshop for our expertise group –  a group of 16 colleagues with similar research interests. Although we frequently co-operate with one another in various ongoing research projects, and although we meet once a month as a group, we felt that knowledge sharing between group members could be improved. The first aim of the workshop was therefore to introduce and discuss various social media and their potential to facilitate knowledge sharing within the group. (more…)

Communication is good, CommUnification is better

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

CommUnification is a design concept conceived to address the In Sync and In Touch challenges faced by nomadic and highly mobile workers.

The project is an initiative by five User-System Interaction students at the Eindhoven University of Technology: Wil Rijnen, Brian Pagán, Ying Li, Zhihui Zhang, and Natalia Gredina. It is based on interview findings that nomadic and highly mobile workers are challenged by such problems as communication fragmentation (across multiple channels) and disregard for time zone differences.
